Oh boy, I discovered another use for recycled pallets!  I love creating works of art that can be useful and, in turn, allow other items’ beauty to be displayed.  I don’t have as much jewelry as most gals, I have a specific allergy to precious metals.  My husband would love to buy me more jewels, but he just can’t because the good stuff turns me green ~ poor guy.

Hartley Rowe: Happy New Year!

My hope for the coming year is to bring some order back to my life while pursuing goals that I will finally put in print.  I say that every year and I never do, but today, I’m doing just that.  I’m home with the nastiest of colds, being the final victim in the household to succumb to this awful virus that has stuck around during our entire holiday break.  One good thing about being ordered to the couch by my kiddos and hubby is that I can catch up on reading, goal setting, and getting organized, in my head and on paper.

Hartley Rowe: Great Weather Pallets = Lots of Fun!

I was finally able to get back to my workshop this weekend that’s in the garage.  The weather here has been unbearably hot the past few weeks and it’s kept me from doing any major woodworking in the garage. It’s like a furnace in there when the temperature rises.  Thank goodness it doesn’t happen too often here in San Diego.

Different Views of the Carina Nebula

The Carina Nebula (also known as the Great Nebula in Carina, the Eta Carinae Nebula, NGC 3372, or Caldwell 92, as well as the Grand Nebula) is a large bright nebula that has within its boundaries several related open clusters of stars.

Eta Carinae and HD 93129A, two of the most massive and luminous stars in our Milky Way galaxy, are among them. The nebula lies at an estimated distance between 6,500 and 10,000 light years from Earth. It appears in the constellation of Carina, and is located in the Carina–Sagittarius Arm. The nebula contains multiple O-type stars.

The nebula is one of the largest diffuse nebulae in our skies. Although it is some four times as large and even brighter than the famous Orion Nebula, the Carina Nebula is much less well known, due to its location in the southern sky. It was discovered by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in 1751–52 from the Cape of Good Hope.

As you know, I’m always trying to make something new out of pallets.  Here is one of my latest creations using pallet boards and salvaged wood.  I love combining different types of wood, sanding each board, and then seeing what new life they take on.  I made two bulletin boards and have listed this one in my Etsy shop.  I’m keeping the other one for myself and will use it to display Christmas cards we receive.

I thought I would share one of my latest creations using salvaged boards.  The jewelry organizer above is made from two pallet boards and two old fence boards.  They were attached to each other with 1” wood screws.  I added cup hooks and a wooden dowel to finish off the construction.  The boards are finished with Minwax Mission Oak stain followed by my trusty old favorite, Howard Feed n Wax.  There’s a saw tooth hanger on the back for easy hanging.
